Zoom h5 vs h6 vs alternatives. JDandCoke Member. Messages 2, Looking for a multipurpose recording device. Primarily to record rehearsals and demos and for taking a line out the desk at gigs. The main use i see for it is personal use at rehearsals, set up the built in xy to capture the room and then close mic myself with a 57 so i can listen back to experimenting with tones etc. Features wise both of these seem to hit the mark so im really curious about comments on their ruggedness and ease of use.
Itll be lugged around in my gig bag and subjected to nornal rigours of gigging. The extra tracks are appealing for demos could take in two guitars, bass, drums on the xy and a vocal scratch track. But we could always overdub onto a 4 track. Anyone used both? Easy enough to setup and get files off etc? Anything i might have overlooked?
Price seems to be about for the h5 and about for the h6. Nevets Silver Supporting Member. Messages 9, I had an H5 and was pretty happy with по этому сообщению. I chose it over the H6 because the H6 is pretty limited in it’s multi-tracking capabilities. For example the built in mics record to tracks 1 адрес страницы 2 only, so you can’t use them to record a scratch vocal over top of tracks you’ve already recorded with the mics if that makes sense.
After some time I sold the H5 zoom h5 vs h6 preamps – zoom h5 vs h6 preamps: got the H4n Pro. Ссылка на подробности all pretty easy to use and well built.
If i do decide i want the ability to record 4 track AND room xy, are there better options than the h6? H6 is already pushing the budget so must be same or less price.
Messages 1, I’m happy with the h6. I use it for recording ideas at home, and taking individual tracks from my gigs for mixing later. I’ve had a few issues in getting my gain stages set up right But that’s user error, not the fault of the unit.
I looked at some of the other units I paid CAD and it’s one of the better investments I’ve made for creating my own music, and getting a sense of what I should work on in my live shows. Its also served well as an interface when I needed one on-the-go, or for troubleshooting at home. I didn’t think I would use it like this at all. JDandCoke said:. Click to expand It has built in Mics and while probably not as good as the h5 or h6 they do a solid job.
Works well. The ability to record 8 channels zoom h5 vs h6 preamps – zoom h5 vs h6 preamps: once is nice. The are larger format but not too big and can run on batteries. Messages I jumped zoom h5 vs h6 preamps – zoom h5 vs h6 preamps: the h6, had it’s first test at this weeks rehearsal and I was impressed at the separation.
I mean it’s not a high quality recording but it’s better zoom h5 vs h6 preamps – zoom h5 vs h6 preamps: the garbled mush that we had from iphone recordings previously and everything could be heard clearly.
Looking нажмите для деталей get some use out of it’s multitrack functions soon! I recently picked up an H6 as well, after pondering which model to get for the longest time. Being able to plug in up to 6 with the expansion capsule mic sources was one of the reasons I wanted the H6, I can record full band live demos with that.
I used по этому адресу this week to record a live metal show at a local club, the recordings came out great. The color screen is a plus for me as well, I dig it more than the screen on a friend’s H4n I’ve played with. You must log in or register to reply here. Trending Topics. So I have been trying to record with my Line Audio Cm3 microphones going into Zoom H4n and realized after weeks of experimentation that no matter what gain setting and mic placement technique I try, I always ended up with noisy recordings because I now have to conclude the output on the Cm3’s is just too low to provide a clean signal for the Zoom.
And my problems are likely to get worse since I plan on buying a Cascade Fathead as well, to record harsh sounding top-heavy instruments like the violin. The sensitivity of ribbon mics like these is probably even lower. It is generally believed that the Zoom H6 has better pres. I don’t mind carrying a small computer with me, if that’ll solve my noise problems.
Will the Scarlett preamps provide high enough gain for those mics? Are they overall better quality than the Zoom preamps? Thanks a lot for any help you might offer! Did you try some other mics with the Zoom to make sure it isn’t the CM-3’s that are noisy? That zoom should have enough clean gain. It is not just quiet, it’s silence-when-no-music quiet. So impressive I wouldn’t be surprised if people couldn’t tell it apart from a top-of-the-line dedicated preamp, in a blind test.
Then your problem is most likely the self noise of the CM3. Somebody else on here was complaining about the CM3 noise recently on this forum. SDC’s are known for having some self noise. I doubt the self noise is what explains it I’m recording quiet sources like nylon-string guitars and will need to turn the gain pretty high.
All right, then. I guess the Scarlett won’t be up to the task either. The used ones are pretty cheap these days. I have no doubt it’ll be better than H6. I’ll just need to get used to carrying a small laptop, for on-location recordings.
Glad to know that about vintage mics. I’ll stick to modern mics for the rest of the collection. The CM3’s are hand-made in Sweden for cheap in a one-man shop, and, to be fair, they’re pretty good mics and the self-noise is only slightly higher than the times-more-expensive Schoeps MK21’s.
But with a week preamp like H4n, it gets out of control, I guess. I use the h6 a lot for live recording and an apogee quartet for studio which has I think the same preamp level as the scarlet and have tried out all sorts of mics on each system. I use an old coles through it occasionally. The scarlett would do everything you want it to but up to you whether it’s worth it over the portability. My Studio. Hello, all! I’m posting here as I’ve been considering buying a Zoom H6 to be used with as an interface with Line Audio CM3s, mostly because of mobility and the fact that I could – if needed – plug up to 4 mics to the H6.
I’ll be recoding mostly bowed strings my own performances and of students. Vesta : do you still find problems with noise, or did you find a way to get rid of the problem?
Thanks for you input! The preamps in the Zoom H6 are as good or better than any preamps you’ll find anywhere. All you need is a Zoom H6 these days. Nobody will know any different. Greenwood Audio. Very Very good to know for fields recordists. Came across this old thread with exactly the same question. As there were many interesting answers but few facts, I tried a small test myself: Focusrite Scarlett 18i8 1. Of course I used same cable on all mics. I did a parallel recording with some acoustic guitar and matched levels at “5” and “7.
The result concerning noise was: 1. RME Fireface showed less noise. Not a surprise really. Scarlett was in between, closer to FF than to H6 concerning noise. Zoom H6 showed the most noise. Especially hissing. The result concerning the acoustic guitar sound was: 1. Fireface sounded most natural or even to me.
OK, no surprise again. Scarlett sounded a bit dull, emphasis on the lows. H6 sounded nasal. The plausible thing: noise and sound behaviour correlate in some way. But: this result is in contradiction to lets say this video – at least concerning the noise.
